パラオでは予てより南米のコスタリカ、ガラパゴス同様に、外国からの旅行者に対し、訪問先の地域社会に対する環境保全、管理の為の゛環境課税(US$15)“を行おうとの動きがあったが、昨年末から之が実施に移された。此の為、之を管理する担当省(資源・環境・観光省)の責任者であるジョセフ・アイタロー氏が2 月14日 Surveillance（スイス）が明らかにした最新のデータによると、2011年にPNGから輸出された熱帯広葉樹木は350万ｍ３で、前年より50万ｍ３も増加している。国際社会が懸念する最大の問題は、PNGでは環境への被害が少ない間伐ではなく、全て切り倒す全面的な伐採(SABL-Special Agricultural and Business Lease)が行われている点である。豪州の森林、気候、環境等の専門家は、重大な関心をもって事態を注視すべきだとしており、PNG政府は地権者の十分な知識も同意もなく、広大な伐採地帯が99年リースされているSABLを調査することにしている。リースされた土地は550万ヘクタールに及び、動植物の生態系、珊瑚礁、漁場、地元住民など広範囲に破壊と悪影響を与えている。木材輸出の最多国であるマレーシアの輸出は減少しているものの、2番目に多いPNGは増加しており、前ソマレ政権は炭酸ガス排出権を売却して伐採を加速させたきらいもあるが、早急に規制を強化する必要がある。 EEZとその隙間を埋める公海も含む3,800万ｋｍ２の海洋を保護管理しようと考えている。太平洋島嶼国の占めるEEZ面積は、世界海洋の約10％を占め、その区域の保護管理は喫緊の重要課題である。きっかけは、現在まで太平洋で最大の海洋資源保護区に指定したキリバスのフェニックス島保護区の管理が成功していることであり、このことで他の島嶼国が刺激を受け、昨年トケラウがEEZ設置を宣言し、30万ｋｍ２と小さいながらも鮫、海亀、イルカ等の保護に貢献している。また、クック諸島も海洋公園を設定して資源保護に乗り出している。海洋保護管理は海水温上昇、海面上昇対策、珊瑚礁保存に有効な海水酸性化防止対策にも貢献していくものと考えられる。
